About Us Our Mission: Helping the helpless Our mission is to represent a symbol of hope and relief for neglected or orphaned children with physical and mental disabilities. We strive to provide these youth with safe homes, educational resources and medical rehabilitation in hopes to create a brighter future for them. By helping a societal minority group that is widely underrepresented within Kenya, we believe our proactive approach will not only create public awareness but also pave an avenue for the global community to exercise the immediate need for action. Our Cause: Curing youth maltreatment and misrepresentation In Kenya, the Samburu community perceives children as its primary source of labor to herd and take care of small stock. However when a physical or mental deformity restricts them from completing their duties, they are then viewed as a financial and social burden. In essence, they are recognized as a curse to their families. Ultimately, disabled children are often killed or abandoned to die. Additionally, widespread poverty coupled with the rigid cultural framework in this district has resulted in different and unfair categorizations of people in the community. Lack of access to basic essentials (i.e. good nutrition, clean water and shelter), harsh environmental conditions and societal ignorance are the main causative factors that fuel the inability to effectively cater to this rising minority. Our Impact: Rediscovering the meaning of community Since 2001, The Children's Home Program has placed over 500 children in safe homes with accessible resources and created awareness within the community to the importance of treating and educating children with disabilities. We have also formed community-based initiatives and several meetings within the public to address issues on various handicaps through organizing educational seminars, awareness workshops and community forums. We believe these initiatives not only increased an overall sense of engagement and stewardship, but have also created a strong bond between our institution's efforts and the Samburu community. Currently the program is taking care of 154 children within its rehabilitation program, but has opened up other small units in the entire district where children are provided with further education and home-based care. Vision Statement Our vision is to sustain this important work through an investment in Nanyuki real estate. With extensive knowledge and experience in The Samburu/Nanyuki region, we have identified an investment in residential real estate. The net income from this investment, once developed and rented, will sustain the orphanage indefinitely. This promotion of entrepreneurship can become a source of pride and inspiration for members of the Samburu community. |
